Sounds Glossary




Diegetic: Sound whose source is visible in the scene

Non-diegetic: Sound that it is not visible in the scene but it’s implied that there is by the action of the scene.

Contrapuntual/ Asynchronus sound: The music /sound doesn’t match with what happen in the scene


Parallel/ Synchronus sound: The sounds/music matches with what happen in the scene.

Ambient sound: Sound from the background ambient of where it is been filmed the scene

SFX: Special effects.


Theme music:  It’s a piece of music that is written specifically for the movie and keeps repeating during the movie.

Voiceover: Voice that comes from “outside” that movie and most of the time explain what the movie is about or explain what happen from another point of view.


Sound bridges: A sound that starts at the end of a scene and anticipate the next one.

Pleonastic/Foley: Sound made in the studio with a special microphone.

Sound motif:  A music of a certain movie that is recognizable.


Selective sound: A sound that make the atmosphere of a scene more recognizable.
